This multicolor large-flowered tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) produces blooms 8–10 inches across in layered, watercolor hues — and unlike the herbaceous peonies you may know, it never disappears in winter. Its woody stems stay standing year-round, eventually reaching 6–8 feet tall and 5 feet wide over decades of slow, unhurried growth.
You’re getting a 2–3 year old bare root plant, already bloomed, shipped at 1–2 feet trimmed. Plant the graft union at least 4 inches below soil level, in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade — full sun will scorch the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently; soggy roots are the primary cause of failure, so let the soil dry 4–6 inches down before watering again. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
