There’s something quietly extraordinary about a plant that will still be blooming long after you’re gone. Hanakisoi (Paeonia suffruticosa) is a large-flowered Japanese tree peony producing dinner-plate-sized blooms — 8 to 10 inches across — in shades that open in April through June with a light-to-medium fragrance that drifts through spring air.
Unlike herbaceous peonies, Hanakisoi keeps its woody framework year-round, eventually reaching 5 to 6 feet tall and wide over its century-long lifespan. You’ll receive a 2-to-3-year-old bare root plant, already bloomed, shipped at 10 to 29 inches.
Give it dappled morning light with afternoon shade — full sun will scorch the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently, always checking 4 to 6 inches below the surface before watering again; consistently moist soil is the most common cause of failure. Fertilize with composted manure each spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4 through 9.
Plant the graft union at least 4 inches below soil level, and this slow-growing beauty will reward your patience for generations.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
