There’s something quietly theatrical about a peony that opens to reveal petals like folded white silk — and Swallow Tail White (Yan Wei Bai) delivers exactly that. Each bloom stretches nearly eight inches across, its white petals edged and shaped in the distinctive layered form that gives this Rockii Tree Peony its name.
You’ll receive a dormant bareroot plant, two to three years old with two to three branches, shipped in fall when the roots are ready to settle into your soil before winter. By spring, expect growth reaching around three feet tall. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, in partial shade with moderate, even moisture — never waterlogged. Hardy in USDA zones 4–9, these plants handle cold well; a light mulch in colder areas gives extra protection.
Fall planting is the right window for tree peonies — roots establish in warm soil, cold stratification triggers strong spring growth, and your first blooms arrive on schedule. Local pickup available upon request.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
