Meet “Prosperous Family” (Fu Gui Man Tang) — a tree peony that earns its poetic name. Each spring, this Chinese heirloom unfurls blooms nearly eight inches across in a cool-toned pink with the kind of depth you want to linger over. Light fragrance drifts on the May air as bees and butterflies arrive uninvited.
Unlike herbaceous peonies that disappear each winter, this woody-stemmed shrub keeps its structure year-round, slowly growing to six to eight feet tall and five feet wide over its century-long lifespan. Plant yours in dappled or afternoon shade — full sun will scorch those large petals. Water deeply but infrequently, letting soil dry four to six inches down between waterings; consistently wet roots are the most common cause of failure. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Plant the graft union at least four inches below soil level.
Hardy in zones 4–9, tolerating temperatures from -45°F to 113°F. Ships as a trimmed bare-root, two to three year old plant, already bloomed once — and ready to become a true garden legacy.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
