There’s something quietly extraordinary about a flowering shrub that will outlive you — and possibly your grandchildren. This large white-flowered tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) produces dinner-plate blooms reaching 7–8 inches across, lightly to moderately fragrant, opening in April through May against a backdrop of elegant, deeply cut foliage.
Unlike herbaceous peonies that disappear each winter, this woody shrub holds its structure year-round — never dropping below about a foot tall — eventually reaching a graceful 5–6 feet in both height and spread. Bare root plants ship trimmed to 10–29 inches; they’re 2–3 years old and have already bloomed.
Plant in partial shade with afternoon protection — full sun will scorch the leaves. Zones 4–9 (tolerates roughly -45°F to 113°F). Water deeply but infrequently, only when soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface, and never near auto-sprinklers. Bury the graft union 4 inches below ground. Fertilize with composted manure in spring and fall. Watch for Botrytis in wet springs; remove affected tissue promptly.

🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
