“Large Hu’s Red” large flower tree peony

$69.99

Run your fingers along a woody stem that has outlasted generations — “Large Hu’s Red” (Da Hu Hong) is a rare Chinese tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) capable of living a century or more, producing dinner-plate blooms 7–9 inches across in shades of deep red each May through June. Unlike herbaceous peonies that vanish each winter, this woody shrub keeps its structure year-round, eventually reaching 6–8 feet tall and 5 feet wide.

🌱 Live plant noticePlants are living, perishable goods and may arrive dormant or experience normal transit stress — leaf drop, yellowing, temporary wilting, cosmetic damage, or soil displacement. These conditions do not necessarily mean a plant is dead.
📄 All sales finalAll sales are final except where a seller expressly states otherwise in the individual listing, a verified dead-on-arrival claim qualifies under the Live Plant Policy, or a refund is required by applicable law.

You’re receiving a 2–3 year old bare root plant, already bloomed, currently 10–29 inches tall.

Give it dappled afternoon shade — full sun scorches the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently, only when soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface; overwatering is the primary cause of failure. Plant the graft union at least 4 inches below soil. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Hardy zones 4–9, tolerating -45°F to 113°F.

A slow-growing, fragrant, non-toxic heirloom shrub that rewards patience with extraordinary longevity.

🍂 Shipping & planting window

Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.

Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.

📍 Local pickup available year-round in Bellevue, WA.
