Run your fingers along the bark of “Alchemist’s Fire” next spring and you’ll feel the permanence of something genuinely rare — a woody, long-lived tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa ‘Huo Lian Jin Dan’) that rewards patient gardeners with glossy, deep red blooms up to 8–9 inches across.
Unlike herbaceous peonies that disappear each winter, this Chinese heirloom keeps its woody structure year-round, growing 6–8 feet tall and 5 feet wide over time. Expect lightly fragrant May–June blooms in your first or second season. Plant in dappled or afternoon shade — full sun will scorch the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently, only when soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface; consistently moist roots are the most common cause of failure. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4–9, tolerating -45°F to 113°F.

Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
