Run your fingers along a woody stem that’s been growing since before you were born — that’s the quiet promise of Jade Hydrangea (Paeonia suffruticosa ‘Yu Ban Xiu Qiu’), a rare Chinese tree peony producing clouds of creamy white blooms up to 7–9 inches across each May.
Unlike herbaceous peonies that vanish underground each winter, this woody shrub holds its structure year-round, eventually reaching 6–7 feet tall and 5 feet wide over a long, slow life that can span a century. Its light-to-medium fragrance drifts beautifully through a partly shaded border.
Plant in dappled afternoon shade — full sun scorches the foliage. Water deeply but only when soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface; continuously moist roots are the leading cause of failure. Amend in spring and fall with composted manure. Hardy from Zone 4–9, tolerating temperatures from -45°F to 113°F. Plant the graft union at least 4 inches below soil level.
Ships as a 2–3 year old bareroot plant, 10–29 inches, already bloomed. Patience rewards you with something genuinely rare.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
