Paeonia lactiflora ‘Gardenia’ is a herbaceous peony flowering in late spring, carrying a scent close to that of gardenia. Plants reach 24–36 inches tall and wide. Plant in full sun to part sun in fertile, well-drained soil, setting the eyes shallowly rather than deeply. Clumps are long-lived and flower more abundantly as they mature. Hardy in USDA zones 3–8 and suited to Pacific Northwest winters. Cut stems back to the ground after the first fall frost. Suitable for borders and for cut-flower growing.
