Close your eyes and imagine that fragrance — the deep, rosy sweetness that stops you mid-step in the garden. Monsieur Jules Elie (*Paeonia lactiflora* ‘Monsieur Jules Elie’) is one of the great classic herbaceous peonies, carrying enormous, fully double blooms in a rich warm pink that only deepen in beauty as the clump matures year after year.
Plant yours in full to part sun in fertile, well-drained soil, and take care not to bury the eyes more than an inch or two below the surface — depth is the most common reason peonies sulk without flowering. Hardy in USDA zones 3–8, this long-lived perennial reaches 24–36 inches tall and wide, making it a natural anchor for spring borders. Cut stems generously for the vase; they’re spectacular. Blooms arrive late spring into early summer, then the handsome foliage carries the garden through fall. Cut back after frost.
Available for fall 2026 or spring 2027 shipping — same price, your choice of timing.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
