There’s something quietly magnificent about a peony that gets better with age — and Paul M. Wild (*Paeonia lactiflora* ‘Paul M. Wild’) is exactly that kind of plant. Each late spring, this herbaceous peony produces large, lushly petaled blooms with a light, pleasant fragrance that drifts through the garden without overwhelming it. Cut a few stems for a vase and you’ll understand why peonies have anchored cutting gardens for generations.

Plant it where it receives full sun to part sun, in fertile, well-drained soil — and pay attention to planting depth. Setting the eyes too shallow or too deep will delay blooming, so aim for about one to two inches below the soil surface. Once established, this clump grows to 24–36 inches tall and wide, hardy in USDA zones 3–8, and genuinely improves year after year. Cut stems back to the ground after the first hard frost each fall.

Paul M. Wild rewards patience with decades of reliable, beautiful blooms. Choose your preferred shipping season at checkout — fall 2026 or spring 2027, same price either way.

🍂 Shipping & planting window

Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.

Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.

📍 Local pickup available year-round in Bellevue, WA.
