There’s something deeply satisfying about a peony that rewards patience — and Peter Brand delivers year after year with increasingly generous blooms of rich, velvety crimson-red that perfume the late spring garden with that unmistakable classic peony fragrance.
This herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora ‘Peter Brand’) grows into a substantial, well-mannered clump reaching 24–36 inches tall and wide, making it a natural anchor for mixed borders or cottage-style gardens. Plant it where it receives full sun to part sun in fertile, well-drained soil, and take care not to bury the eyes more than an inch or two below the surface — depth is the most common reason peonies sulk without blooming. Hardy in USDA Zones 3–8, it’s built for Pacific Northwest winters and beyond. Cut stems back after the first hard frost each fall.
The blooms are exceptional for cutting, and the plant genuinely improves with age, producing more flowers as the clump matures over seasons and decades.
Available for Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 shipping — same price either way.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
