Each spring, a tree peony stops you in your tracks — blooms the size of dinner plates, layered in soft pink silk, opening slowly on a woody framework that gets more magnificent with age.
Unlike herbaceous peonies that disappear underground each winter, this tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) keeps its branching structure year-round, building into a substantial shrub over time. Mature plants reach 4–6 feet tall and nearly as wide, so give it space to become the garden anchor it’s meant to be.
Plant in full sun to part shade, in fertile, well-drained soil. Shelter from harsh afternoon heat and strong wind protects those extraordinary blooms. Hardy in USDA zones 4–7, it asks for very little — remove dead wood only, and let it settle in.
We ship bare root in fall (September–November), the only window that sets peonies up for genuine success. Cold stratification through winter triggers strong root development and reliable bloom the following spring. Local pickup available year-round in Bellevue, WA.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
