That first warm morning when Alertie opens — layers of petals releasing a rich, heady fragrance into your garden — you’ll understand why gardeners keep peonies for decades.
Peony Alertie is a classic herbaceous peony valued for its large, deeply fragrant late-spring blooms and exceptional presence in the border. One of the best fragrant peonies for Pacific Northwest gardens, it grows 24–36 inches tall and wide, making it equally suited to cutting gardens and long-lived landscape plantings. Established clumps reward patience — blooms grow more generous and abundant each year.
Plant in full to part sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Set eyes no more than 1–2 inches deep; too deep and it won’t bloom. Hardy in USDA zones 3–8. Cut back to the ground after fall frost.
Alertie ships bare root in fall — the optimal window for establishment. Cold stratification through winter sets the stage for strong, reliable spring bloom. Local pickup available upon request.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
