Something about a bloom this large stops you mid-step. The Crimson Lantern — known in Chinese as Hong Sha Deng — is a Rockii Tree Peony that opens flowers nearly 9 inches across in deep, luminous red, the kind of color that seems to glow from within on a cloudy Pacific Northwest morning.
You’ll receive a dormant bareroot plant, 2–3 years old with 2–3 established branches, shipped 10–25 inches tall during our fall window (September–November). This timing isn’t arbitrary — fall planting lets roots settle into warm soil before winter, and cold stratification is what triggers that reliable, vigorous spring flush. By the following season, your plant can reach around 3 feet tall.
Crimson Lantern thrives in partial shade with moderate, even moisture during establishment. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil that’s neutral to slightly alkaline. Hardy through USDA zones 4–9, it’s deciduous and very cold-tolerant — just mulch lightly in colder climates and keep roots out of waterlogged winter soil.
