Yu Qiu Xiang is a Chinese heirloom Rockii tree peony (Paeonia rockii) bearing white petals faintly flushed with blush in flowers around six inches across, carrying a fragrance that travels through the garden. This deciduous tree peony is noted for cold hardiness and is hardy in USDA zones 4–9. Plant in partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil with neutral to slightly alkaline pH, with moderate, even moisture during establishment and no waterlogging, particularly in winter. A light mulch protects the roots in colder climates. Mature plants reach roughly three feet.
Supplied as a dormant bare-root plant, two to three years old, with two to three branches, shipped in fall (September–November). Local pickup available on request.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
