Phyllostachys bissetii

Dense, glossy dark green and famously tough. The usual choice for a fast screen in exposed or cold sites.

Running bamboo. This species spreads by underground rhizomes and will travel beyond where you plant it, including under a fence into a neighbour’s garden. Plan on a 60 mil HDPE rhizome barrier, or a large container, before it goes in the ground. We sell it because it screens faster and taller than anything else; we will not pretend it stays put.

Mature height: 20-30 ft. Habit: Running. Grown in the Pacific Northwest by Cascade Gardens.
