Thamnocalamus tessellatus

Bergbamboes. Distinctive white papery sheaths that wrap the canes like bandages. Historically used for Zulu shields. Handsome and unusual.

Clumping bamboo. Expands slowly outward from the crown rather than running. No barrier needed. It widens a few inches a year, so leave room and you can otherwise forget about it.

Mature height: 12-16 ft. Habit: Clumping. Grown in the Pacific Northwest by Cascade Gardens.
