Makedonia Red Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a vigorous, cold-hardy pomegranate variety originating from northern Greece, valued for its large, richly colored fruit and excellent flavor. The fruit features a deep red rind with juicy, bright red arils that offer a well-balanced sweet-tart taste. This variety is known for consistent production and strong adaptability across a range of growing conditions.

USDA Growing Zones:

Hardy in USDA Zones 7–10. In cooler climates, plants benefit from winter protection when young.

Fruiting Habits:

Makedonia Red is self-fertile and typically begins producing within 2–3 years. It bears a heavy fall crop, with fruit maturing in early to mid-autumn. Flowers are showy, bright orange-red, adding ornamental value in spring and early summer.

Growing Conditions:

  • Sun: Full sun for best flowering and fruit development
  • Soil: Well-draining soil; tolerant of poor or rocky soils
  • Water: Moderate; drought tolerant once established
  • Growth Size: Typically 10–15 feet tall, can be maintained smaller with pruning
  • Maintenance: Low; responds well to shaping and renewal pruning

Makedonia Red Pomegranate is well suited for fresh eating, juicing, and culinary use. With its attractive fruit, dependable yields, and cold tolerance, it is an excellent choice for home orchards, edible landscapes, and container growing in suitable climates.
