Black Velvet gooseberry is a compact, thorny gooseberry shrub grown for its dark purple to near-black berries and strong production once established. It’s a good fit for home gardens and small orchards because it stays fairly manageable in size, handles cold winters well, and produces fruit that works for both fresh eating (when fully ripe) and cooking. The berries usually ripen in mid to late summer, with a rich, tangy flavor that’s especially popular for jam, syrup, pie filling, and freezing.

Like most gooseberries, Black Velvet does best in full sun for the highest yields, but it can also handle partial shade, especially in hotter areas where a bit of afternoon shade helps. It prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil and benefits from mulch to keep roots cool and reduce watering swings. Pruning in late winter or early spring helps open the plant up for airflow, keeps the size under control, and encourages steady fruiting year after year. Expect thorns during harvest, so gloves make picking more comfortable.
