Run your fingers along the woody stems of “Lavender Silk” and you’ll understand immediately why tree peonies (*Paeonia suffruticosa*) are in a category of their own. Unlike herbaceous peonies that disappear each winter, this cold-hardy shrub holds its structure year-round, eventually reaching 5–6 feet tall and wide — and living a century or more.
Those lavender silk blooms arrive in April–May, stretching 7–9 inches across with a light-to-medium fragrance that carries on still spring mornings. Plant in partial shade with afternoon protection; full sun will scorch the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently — let soil dry 4–6 inches down before watering again, and keep roots away from automatic sprinklers. Hardy from Zone 4–9 (tolerates -45°F to 113°F). Plant the graft union 4 inches below soil level. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall.
You’re receiving a 2–3 year old bareroot plant, 10–29 inches, already bloomed and ready to flower again next spring. Slow-growing, long-lived, and genuinely rare — this is a garden investment worth planning around.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
