Xue Ying Tao Hua is a Chinese tree peony bearing large blooms of soft blush petals etched in white, lightly sweet in fragrance, opening in May. It is a woody shrub whose stems stay above ground year-round, reaching five to six feet tall and wide, and established plants are long-lived. Plant where it receives morning light and afternoon shade, since full sun scorches the leaves. Water deeply but infrequently, checking six inches below the surface before watering again — soggy roots are the primary cause of failure. Top-dress with composted manure each spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4–9, drought-tolerant once established, and non-invasive.
Supplied as a two to three year old bare-root plant that has already bloomed, currently 10–29 inches.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
