Unlike herbaceous peonies, this is a true woody shrub — its stems stay above ground year-round, eventually reaching five to six feet tall and wide. Established plants are remarkably long-lived, often outlasting a century. Yours arrives as a 2–3 year old bare-root plant, 10–29 inches, already bloomed.

Tuck it somewhere with morning light and afternoon shade; full sun will scorch those gorgeous leaves. Water deeply but infrequently — soggy roots are the primary cause of failure, so check six inches below the surface before watering again. Top-dress with composted manure each spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4–9, drought-tolerant once established, and genuinely non-invasive.

A living heirloom worth every bit of the wait.

🍂 Shipping & planting window

Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.

Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.

📍 Local pickup available year-round in Bellevue, WA.
