There’s something quietly extraordinary about a tree peony that has been blooming in Chinese gardens for centuries — and “Dark Gold Dazzle Splendor” (Wu Jin Yao Hui) brings that legacy to your Pacific Northwest garden.
This rare woody peony unfurls deep wine-red flowers measuring 8–9 inches across in late April through May, carried on permanent woody stems that never die back to the ground. Mature plants reach 6–8 feet tall and 5 feet wide over time, living well over a hundred years when sited correctly. Yours arrives as a 2–3 year old bare-root plant, 10–29 inches tall, already bloomed.
Give it dappled or afternoon shade — unlike herbaceous peonies, full sun will scorch it. Water deeply but infrequently, only when soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface; overwatering is the primary cause of failure. Plant the graft union at least 4 inches below soil level. Fertilize with composted manure in spring and fall. Hardy from Zone 4–9, tolerating -45°F to 113°F.
Pre-order now for fall 2026 delivery. Some things are genuinely worth the wait.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
