You know that moment when a flower stops you mid-step? That’s what Yachiyo Tsubaki delivers every May, when its dinner-plate blooms—8 to 10 inches across—unfurl in shades that feel almost too extravagant to be real.

Unlike common herbaceous peonies that disappear underground each winter, this large-flower Japanese tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) keeps its woody framework year-round, slowly maturing into a 5 to 6-foot shrub that can genuinely outlive generations. Shipped as a 2 to 3-year-old bare-root plant, it arrives trimmed but ready.

Plant it where it receives morning light and afternoon shade—full sun scorches the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently; soggy roots are its primary enemy. Let the soil dry several inches below the surface before watering again. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4–9, drought-tolerant once established, and lightly fragrant.

Watch for botrytis in wet springs—remove any gray-moldy tissue promptly to keep this century-long companion thriving.

🍂 Shipping & planting window

Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.

Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.

📍 Local pickup available year-round in Bellevue, WA.
