Before you’ve even stepped outside on a May morning, the fragrance reaches you — light, honeyed, drifting from blooms the size of a salad plate.
“Sweet Magic” (*Paeonia suffruticosa* ‘Jing Hong Fei He’) is a rare Chinese tree peony, and genuinely different from the herbaceous peonies you may have grown before. Its woody stems remain standing through winter — you’ll never lose it to an accidental footstep — and with patience, this plant grows into a 5–6 ft flowering shrub that can outlive you by generations.
Flowers reach 7–9 inches across in April–May, with light-to-medium fragrance. Hardy from Zone 4–9 (tolerating roughly -45°F to 113°F), it asks for partial shade, especially in the afternoon, and well-draining soil. Overwatering is the primary cause of failure: water deeply only when soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface. Plant the graft union 4 inches below ground. Amend with composted manure in spring and fall.
Ships as a 10–29 inch bareroot, 2–3 year old plant that has already bloomed. Pre-order now for fall 2026 delivery.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
