Ri Yue Tong Hui — Sun and Moon in Harmonious Glory — is a Chinese tree peony bearing blooms seven to ten inches across in layered blush petals, opening in May and June with light fragrance. It is a woody shrub that keeps its stems year-round and reaches five to six feet tall and wide. Plant in partial shade with afternoon protection, since tree peonies scorch in full sun. Water deeply but infrequently, only when the soil is dry four to six inches below the surface — soggy roots are the primary cause of failure. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4–9 and drought-tolerant once established.
