Imagine standing beside a shrub covered in dinner-plate blooms — each flower seven to ten inches across, blushing in layers of petals that seem to hold both sunrise and moonset at once. That’s “Ri Yue Tong Hui,” or Sun & Moon in Harmonious Glory, a rare Chinese tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) that earns its poetic name every May and June.
Unlike herbaceous peonies that disappear underground each winter, this woody shrub keeps its stems year-round, slowly reaching five to six feet tall and wide over its lifetime — which can genuinely span a century. You’ll receive a two-to-three-year-old bareroot plant, already bloomed, trimmed to one to two feet for shipping.
Plant it in partial shade with afternoon protection — tree peonies scorch in full sun. Water deeply but infrequently, only when soil is dry four to six inches below the surface; soggy roots are the primary cause of failure. Hardy in zones 4–9, drought tolerant once established, and lightly fragrant. Fertilize with composted manure in spring and fall.
This is a generational plant. Preorder now for fall 2026 delivery.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
