If you’ve ever wanted a garden centerpiece that outlives you by decades, “Sapphire Towers” tree peony (*Paeonia suffruticosa* ‘Lan Yu San Tai’) is worth your full attention. Unlike common herbaceous peonies that disappear underground each winter, this rare Chinese shrub keeps its woody structure year-round — reaching 5–6 feet tall and wide at maturity, with dinner-plate blooms stretching 6–8 inches across in late spring.
You’ll receive a 2–3 year old bareroot plant, already bloomed, currently 10–29 inches. Expect slow, steady growth and flowers every May through June with a light-to-medium fragrance.
Plant in partial shade — afternoon protection is essential. Tree peonies prefer dry conditions; overwatering is the most common misstep. Let soil dry 4–6 inches deep before watering deeply at the roots. Avoid automatic sprinklers and wetting foliage to prevent botrytis fungal disease. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall.
Hardy in zones 4–9, drought-tolerant once established, non-toxic, and genuinely rare. This is a hundred-year plant — give it a good home.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
