You’re bringing home a living heirloom — one that may well outlast you by a century.
Tree peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa) are a different creature from the soft-stemmed peonies most gardeners know. Their woody stems persist through winter, eventually reaching 5–6 feet tall and wide, and each spring they unfurl dinner-plate-sized blooms — 7 to 10 inches across — in shades of blush, coral, peach, warm yellow, creamy white, and deep rose-red. This listing is a lost-tag surprise: you won’t know your exact color until it blooms next May or June, which is half the pleasure.
These are 2–3 year old bareroot plants, shipped trimmed to 10–29 inches. Plant in part shade — afternoon protection is essential; full sun scorches the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently, only when soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface. Overwatering is the primary cause of failure. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4–9, drought tolerant once established, lightly fragrant, non-toxic, and non-invasive.
A slow-growing, centuries-long companion worth every bit of patience.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
