Few garden plants reward patience the way a peony does — and Madame Debatene is exactly the kind of beauty that makes waiting worthwhile. Her large, lush blooms arrive in late spring to early summer, filling the air with that unmistakable sweet-floral fragrance and bringing serious drama to the border. Cut a few stems and bring them inside; they’re exceptional in a vase.
Plant her in full to part sun in fertile, well-drained soil, and take care not to bury the eyes more than one to two inches deep — depth is everything with peonies. She’s cold-hardy across USDA zones 3–8, grows to a tidy 24–36 inches tall and wide, and simply gets better with age as the clump matures and blooms multiply. Cut back to the ground after the first hard frost each fall.
