Run your fingers along the woody stems of Hatsugarasu (*Paeonia suffruticosa*) and you’ll understand immediately why this is not your grandmother’s peony. This rare Japanese tree peony produces deeply saturated, wine-red blooms reaching 7–8 inches across — flowers so substantial they almost don’t seem real — in May through June, with a light to medium fragrance that drifts pleasantly through the garden.
Unlike herbaceous peonies that disappear underground each winter, Hatsugarasu builds a permanent woody framework over decades, eventually reaching 6–8 feet tall and 5 feet wide. Your plant ships as a 2–3 year old bare root, 10–29 inches, already bloomed. Plant the graft union at least 4 inches below soil level.
Light: Part shade — afternoon protection is essential. Water: deeply but infrequently; soggy roots are the primary cause of failure, so avoid automatic sprinkler zones. Hardy to Zone 4–9 (-45°F to 113°F). Fertilize with composted manure in spring and fall.
A living heirloom for the patient gardener. Available for fall 2026 preorder.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
