Open a packet of Common Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) and you’re planting something genuinely useful. Come midsummer, lemon-scented, bowl-shaped yellow flowers — up to 2 inches across — unfurl each evening along tall, purple-tinged stems, staying open through late morning for bees and night-flying moths alike. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and seed-eating birds all follow.

As a biennial, it spends its first year as a leafy rosette, then sends up 3–5 ft. flowering stems in year two and self-sows quietly from there. Plant it in full sun with average, well-drained soil — it handles drought, sandy or gravelly ground, and light shade without complaint. Deer tend to leave it alone.

Bonus: the whole plant is edible. Young leaves cook like greens; flowers dress up a salad beautifully.

Ideal for wildflower gardens, meadow plantings, and naturalized areas across most of the U.S. and Canada. Local pickup only — no shipping available.
