Picture the moment in late spring when ‘Feng Huo Tai’ — Fire Beacon Tower — opens its first bloom: a dinner-plate-sized flower, six to eight inches across, unfolding in shades that live up to its name. This is not your grandmother’s soft-stemmed peony. As a true tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa), it builds a permanent woody framework that stays above ground through every winter, slowly growing into a five-to-six-foot shrub that can outlive everyone in your household by decades.
Plant yours in dappled light with afternoon shade — full sun will scorch the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry four to six inches down between waterings; soggy roots are the primary cause of failure, so keep it well away from automatic sprinklers. Hardy in zones 4–9, it handles both harsh winters and hot summers with quiet resilience. Fertilize with composted manure in spring and fall, and watch for botrytis during wet seasons, removing any affected tissue promptly.
Ships as a two-to-three-year-old bareroot plant, already bloomed, currently ten to twenty-nine inches tall. A slow-growing investment in generations of beauty.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
