There’s something quietly extraordinary about a flowering shrub that can outlive you by decades — and ‘Blue Wild Rose’ (*Paeonia suffruticosa* ‘Lan Qiang Wei’) is exactly that kind of plant. Unlike common herbaceous peonies that disappear underground each winter, this Chinese tree peony holds its woody structure year-round, eventually reaching 5–6 feet tall and wide, with blossoms spanning a full 6–8 inches across. In May, expect lightly fragrant blooms in soft, dusky tones that stop people mid-step.
Plant yours in dappled or morning light — afternoon shade is essential, not optional. Tree peonies are sensitive to overwatering; let the soil dry 4–6 inches deep before watering thoroughly, and keep it away from auto-sprinkler zones. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4–9, and genuinely drought-tolerant once established.
You’ll receive a 2–3 year old bareroot plant, 10–29 inches, already bloomed. Slow-growing, non-invasive, non-toxic, and thornless — this is a considered investment in your garden’s future.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
