Run your fingers along a woody stem that has been growing since before your grandparents were born — that’s the quiet promise inside each of these tree peony (*Paeonia suffruticosa*) seeds. Unlike herbaceous peonies that disappear underground each winter, tree peonies hold their ground year-round on sturdy, permanent stems, eventually reaching 5–6 feet tall and wide, with dinner-plate blooms measuring 8–10 inches across in soft May–June fragrance.
Plant yours in part shade — afternoon shelter is essential, as full sun scorches the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently, only when soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface; consistently moist roots are the leading cause of failure. Fertilize with composted manure in spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4–9, these Chinese-origin shrubs tolerate harsh winters and hot summers with ease once established.
Watch for Botrytis (peony wilt) during wet springs and remove any affected tissue promptly. Not toxic, not invasive, and genuinely rare — growing a tree peony from seed is a slow, deeply rewarding practice. Ten seeds per package.

Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
