Run your fingers along the woody stems of “Welcoming the Red Sun” (*Paeonia suffruticosa* ‘Ying Ri Hong’) in late winter and you’ll understand immediately why this is not your grandmother’s peony — these branches never disappear.

This rare Chinese tree peony grows into a shrub 6–8 feet tall and 5 feet wide, producing lightly fragrant flowers 8–9 inches across in April–May. Unlike herbaceous peonies, the woody framework persists year-round, eventually reaching eye level while living a century or more. Hardy from Zone 4–9 (tolerating -45°F to 113°F), it’s genuinely tough.

Give it partial shade — afternoon shade is essential. Overwatering is the primary cause of failure: water deeply only when soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface, and keep it away from automatic sprinklers. Amend with rabbit or composted manure each spring and fall. Plant the graft union at least 4 inches below soil level.

Your bareroot plant ships trimmed to 1–2 feet tall — already 2–3 years old and previously bloomed. Rare large-flower tree peony for Pacific Northwest gardens and beyond.

🍂 Shipping & planting window

Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.

Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.

📍 Local pickup available year-round in Bellevue, WA.
