Run your hand along the woody stem of Shimano-fuji and you already sense this is no ordinary peony — this is a living heirloom.
A Japanese large-flower tree peony (*Paeonia suffruticosa* ‘Shimano-fuji’), this rare woody shrub grows 6–8 feet tall and 5 feet wide at maturity, producing dinner-plate blooms of 8–9 inches in lightly fragrant waves each May through June. Unlike herbaceous peonies, its woody stems persist through winter, so you’ll never lose track of it in the garden. Expect a century of blooms from a single plant.
Plant in part shade — afternoon shelter is essential, as full sun will scorch the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently, only when soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface; excess moisture is the primary cause of failure. Plant the graft union at least 4 inches below soil level. Hardy in zones 4–9, tolerating -45°F to 113°F. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Shipped as a 2–3 year old bareroot, 10–29 inches.
A slow-growing treasure worth every patient year.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
