Picture creamy white blooms — each one nearly the size of a dinner plate — opening slowly in your spring garden as the last cool days give way to May warmth. “Mount Helan in the Snow” (He Lan Wo Xue) is a rare Chinese tree peony (*Paeonia suffruticosa*) with lightly fragrant flowers spanning 7–10 inches across, in a soft white that earns its poetic name.
Unlike herbaceous peonies that vanish underground each winter, this woody shrub keeps its stems year-round, eventually reaching 5–6 feet tall and wide. Planted today, it could outlive you — tree peonies routinely live a century or more. Yours arrives as a 2–3 year old bareroot plant that has already bloomed.
Give it dappled afternoon shade (full sun scorches the foliage), and water deeply only when the soil is dry several inches below the surface — consistently wet roots are the primary cause of failure. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4–9, tolerant of cold winters and hot summers once established.

Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
