There’s something quietly extraordinary about a flowering shrub that will still be blooming long after you’re gone. “Ping Fen Qiu Se” — translated as “Evenly Matched” — is a rare Chinese tree peony that produces enormous, lightly fragrant blooms reaching 6–8 inches across each May, in soft tones that give the variety its poetic name.
Unlike herbaceous peonies that disappear underground each winter, this woody shrub keeps its structure year-round — its stems never die back to the ground — eventually reaching 5–6 feet tall and wide over a slow, graceful lifetime that can span a century.
You’ll receive a 2–3 year old bareroot plant, already bloomed, shipped dormant at 10–29 inches. Plant it in dappled or morning light with afternoon shade; direct afternoon sun will scorch the foliage. Water deeply but infrequently — soggy roots are the primary cause of failure, so always check moisture several inches below the surface before watering. Hardy zones 4–9. Fertilize with composted manure in spring and fall.
This is a rare large-flower tree peony worth preordering for fall 2026 planting.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
