Eclipse (Hong Fen Jia Ren) is a Rockii tree peony — a centuries-old Chinese garden lineage prized for extraordinary cold hardiness and flowers with that signature dark flare at the petal base. This deciduous woody shrub thrives in partial shade with moderate, even moisture during establishment; never let roots sit in waterlogged soil. It prefers fertile, well-drained ground that leans neutral to slightly alkaline. Hardy through USDA zones 4–9, it handles Pacific Northwest winters beautifully — just mulch lightly in colder microclimates.
Your plant ships as a dormant bareroot, 2–3 years old with 2–3 branches, 10–25 inches tall. Expect roughly 3 feet of growth by its first spring. Fall planting — our only ship window — gives roots a quiet head start before the season turns.
