Shan Hu Tai is a woody tree peony bearing salmon-pink to coral-red blooms 8–10 inches across with light to medium fragrance, opening May through June. It is slow-growing, eventually reaching 6–8 feet tall and 5 feet wide, and holds its stems above ground year-round. Plant where it receives morning sun and afternoon shade; direct afternoon sun scorches the foliage. Set the graft union at least 4 inches below soil level. Water deeply but infrequently, only when the soil is dry 4–6 inches below the surface — overwatering is the primary cause of failure. Feed with composted manure in spring and fall. Hardy in zones 4–9, tolerating both hard winters and hot summers.
