For Wang Wang

She was about a year old, and the people of Pingpu Village called her Wang Wang. She lived near the roadside, and when her time came she built a nest for herself in the mouth of a drainage pipe out of cardboard and scraps of plastic. Three puppies were born there. They were roughly two weeks old, still too young to have opened their eyes.
On 28 June 2026, all four were killed. It was filmed.
Those responsible were children — all under fourteen, below the age of criminal responsibility in China. No charges were brought. They were sent to a specialized school for corrective education, and the matter was closed.
On 14 July, a billboard went up in Times Square. It showed Wang Wang standing over her puppies, in the days before.
Why this page exists
Banners come down. Posts get removed. Search results thin out until a thing that happened becomes a thing nobody can quite confirm.
So this is a permanent, linkable record. Not of who did it — that question has an answer the law already gave, and repeating four children's names here would serve nothing except a mob. What this page keeps is the part that can still change: an animal in China has no legal standing of its own. There is no national anti-cruelty statute covering companion animals. Killing Wang Wang broke no law that anyone could charge.
That is the gap. It is the reason this was survivable for everyone except her.

If it moved you, the useful things are ordinary ones. Support the sanctuaries and rescues near you. Foster. Neuter the strays in your own street. Speak up when you see something, and know how to report it.
