Run your hand along a peony stem in late spring and you already know something good is coming. Mme. Emile Debatene (*Paeonia lactiflora* ‘Mme. Emile Debatene’) delivers on that promise with large, deeply colored blooms that arrive from late spring into early summer — and the plants only get more generous with age.
This is the kind of herbaceous peony that earns its place in the garden for decades. Clumps mature into strong, upright plants, typically reaching 24–36 inches tall and wide, with sturdy stems that hold up beautifully in a vase. Give it full sun to part sun, fertile and well-drained soil, and — this matters — plant the eyes no deeper than 1–2 inches below the soil surface. Water consistently while establishing, then let it settle in.
Hardy through USDA zones 3–8, it’s a natural fit for Pacific Northwest gardens and cold-climate perennial borders alike. Cut back to the ground after the first hard frost. Come spring, it’ll be back.
🍂 Shipping & planting window
Peonies ship in fall (September–November) when fully dormant and bare root. This is the only window we ship.
Fall planting gives roots a full season to establish in warm soil before winter. Cold stratification triggers strong, healthy spring growth and reliable bloom production. Spring-shipped peonies experience root damage during active growth, transplant shock during their bloom cycle, and often lose an entire growing season.
